Male Pattern Hair Loss

Male Pattern Hair Loss

Male pattern hair loss is the most common type of hair loss, it affects around half of all men by 50 years of age. It generally starts by thinning of the hair on the crown and temples, leaving baldness around the back and sides of the head. In some cases, it can progress to complete baldness. It is also proven to be hereditary, as it runs in families and can be caused by over sensitive hair follicles, linked to having too much of a certain male hormone.

“A fantastic day.  Members of staff were very helpful and friendly. The expert team are great – really put my mind at rest.  Had no worries was made to feel very comfortable – Tea Coffee Toast…Very little pain. Do not hesitate if you need this operation.  Best thing I’ve done. Thank you very much.”

male pattern hair lossMale Pattern Hair Loss – Treatments

For some men, baldness can be distressing, particularly if it is excessive or occurs early in life. Treatment may help, medication is not available on the NHS, one of the treatments we use works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone.

The hair follicles are then not affected by this hormone and can enlarge back to normal, however it takes at least four months for any effect to be noticed and up to 1-2 years for full hair growth.

The balding process will return if treatment stops, therefore, if successful, you need to carry on treatment to maintain the effect. Techniques such as hair transplantation have worked successfully for a number of years. A wig or hair piece is another option for baldness. Some people find them useful; others find them uncomfortable and not very convincing.
