Alopecia

Alopecia

Alopecia can affect both males and females and is a major medical condition where severe episodes can ultimately lead to permanent hair loss. There are different types and severity of alopecia in most cases the hair does grow back naturally however in some severe cases some sort of hair replacement treatment is required, which is where our UK hair loss clinics come in.

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is normally caused by problems with a person’s immune system. It’s also believed some people’s genes make them more susceptible to alopecia areata. It affects one or two people in every 1,000 in the UK. This can usually lead to patches of baldness which usually appear on the scalp, patches about the size of a large coin.

It can occur at any age, anywhere on the body, but mostly affects teenagers and young adults. It’s more common among people with other autoimmune conditions, such as an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) and diabetes.

In most cases of alopecia areata the hair will grow back in a few months, however some people go on to develop a more severe form of hair loss, such as:

  • alopecia totalis (no scalp hair)
  • alopecia universalis (no hair on the scalp and body)

Alopecia – Scarring alopecia

Scarring alopecia or cicatricial alopecia, is usually caused by complications of another condition. In this type of alopecia it is more severe as this means the hair won’t grow back as the hair follicle (the small hole in your skin that an individual hair grows out of) is completely destroyed and the skin where the hair has fallen out is likely to be affected in some way.

Our fully trained staff at our UK hair loss clinics are fully qualified to give advice about treatments of any form of alopecia which is why we offer a FREE initial consultation to diagnose any form of hair loss, so get in touch today!
